Introduction

The goal of this document is to have a central location of what parts to buy and where for the Spinner modular cryostat and it’s modified versions. All quantities listed below are for a single cryostat.

Terminology:

  • Sheetmetal : A 3D plane of metal that can be cut with a laser and bent to certain degrees. Features such as holes, tapped holes, and bends can be used to achieve parts normally only achieved with CNC machining.
  • CNC Machined : A 3D object that requires features in more than 2 dimensions.
  • GM : Gifford-McMahon. A type of cryocooler.
  • Pulse Tube : A type of cryocooler.
  • Chase (CRC) : Chase Research Cryogenics design and manufacture sub-Kelvin sorption coolers and heat switches for both the scientific and engineering communities.

Tools required:

Requirement on all cryostat systems!

All of these systems must include a pressure relief valve in the case of over pressure inside the cryostat. These systems are already fairly safe and this valve should make it conform to any laboratory safety protocol.

Pressure relief part number: 559B-1M-10
This is a 1/8 NPT fitting. You can find the respective adapter for the 1/8th NPT fitting such as KF40 seen below. Thread the valve in using plumbers tape (tape should be clockwise direction) .

Choosing a ISO160 full nipple or bellow

Non vibration dampening setup:

For a non-vibration setup, you only require a iso160 full nipple. The length can vary based upon whether your system is a 4K or 1K cryostat. No additional springs or threaded rod sis required.

4K cryostat:

The length can be from 3.5” - 5.5”.
Below are pictures from 3.375” to 5”. I would aim for a 4” length so bend brackets can be pushed and moved if need be.

1K cryostat:

We recommend a 5.5” length iso160 full nipple. This provides1 inch of clearance between the 4K cold head and the 1K cryocooler.

Useful Greases

Thermal transfer grease

When thermally connecting the copper heat straps or any metal to metal contact in which you care about thermal transfer, use a small amount of Apiezon N grease:

Vacuum sealing grease

In the case of Idealvac Walls not sealing properly overtime or for PCB / electrical feedthrough and vacuum flanges, use a small amount of Dow Corning High Vacuum Grease

Spinner Base System

This is the most simple modular cryostat version. It takes a GM RDK-101D cryocooler and can reach a base temperature slightly below ~3K.

Cubes walls other than the Iso-160 wall & blank wall on the bottom of the cube for the RKD101-D we use are all optional. These depend on your pumping setup, pressure relief, electrical feedthrough.
